Consequences of intergenerational family solidarity for mental health: Family ties as buffers or stressors?

This is the third Multilinks deliverable within workpackage 3. Nienke Moor and Aafke Komter examine how ties with parents, siblings, a partner and children affect people’s mental well-being. Because the authors aim to study the possible consequences of demographic changes for depressive mood, they explicitly focus on the number of family ties people have, rather than on their quality.

The impact of demographic changes on intergenerational solidarity in families

This article is the second deliverable within workpackage 3. It examines how demographic characteristics relating to fertility, mortality, divorce, and stepfamily formation affect emotional support between parents and children in Europe. Nienke Moor and Aafke Komter studied emotional support up and down family lineages.

In this first working paper for workpackage 3 Nienke Moor and Aafke Komter give an overview of the demographic trends that occurred in Europe over the last decades, and describe some of the main aspects on which European populations differ.

Relationships between parents and their adult children: a West European typology of late-life families. Using multiple dimensions of intergenerational solidarity drawn from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, Pearl Dykstra and Tineke Fokkema develop a typology of late-life families which is robust across northern, central and southern regions.

Deliverable 3.1: Family Constellations in Europe

This deliverable uses UN data to provide an overview of how demographic development have changed family constellations over the years. GGS data is used to provide an overview of the current state of family constellations in various European countries.

Intergenerational family responsibility and solidarity in Europe

The aim of work package 4 is to study variations in support for family obligations within and across countries, to examine the relationship between attitudes towards family responsibility and actual provision of support, and to explore the impact of family and health changes on attitudes and support patterns. In this deliverable Katharina Herlofson, Gunhild Hagestad, Britt Slagsvold and Anne-Mette Sørensen review a number of analyses which have been carried out within the framework of work package 4.

Deliverable 4.2: Demographic Change and Family Obligations

Using Dutch GGS data, this deliverable synthesizes some key findings from research in Workpackage 4. The aim of that workpackage is to gain insight in differential feelings of family obligations.

5th MULTILINKS policy brief

Since the 1970s family formation patterns have been changing as the result of the emergence of unmarried cohabitation, the rise in divorce, the postponement of childbearing, and so forth. In this policy brief, Arnstein Aassve and Nicolas Robette try to understand the extent to which traditional family formation patterns persist and new ones are emerging.

In this third Policy Brief, the assumptions on how welfare state arrangements might shape intergenerational family solidarity are summarized. Results of explicit tests of these assumptions are presented. The findings call for a more holistic and more differentiated perspective on the role of European welfare states in intergenerational transfers in families. 2nd MULTILINKS Policy Brief

In this second Policy Brief, opinions of Europeans on the timing of retirement are presented and evaluated in the light of European-wide targets set in Stockholm and Barcelona to increase labour force participation of older adults. This focus on the opinions of Europeans on retirement supplements the largely economic perspective usually taken with regard to discussing retirement issues. This policy brief was written by Aat Liefbroer.

1st MULTILINKS Policy Brief

In this first Multilinks policy brief, the legal and policy frameworks regulating intergenerational obligations are selected and assembled for all EU 27 countries to offer a contextual basis for the comparative analysis of patterns of intergenerational relationships.
